Section 11 and 12 – Right Wing Spar and Ribs

Ok, I’m guilt of not updating here for a while. I have been working but since I’ve moved on to the right wing, I don’t feel like I’m plowing any new ground here, just redoing what I’ve already done once on the left.

I ordered a new countersink cutter since the original one was cutting oblong holes. I assume it was dulled from all of the countersinks on the left side. While I was at it, I went ahead and got a couple of different styles to see if I could keep it from chattering as much. I got the traditional 3-blade cutter from Avery Tools and also a 1-blade cutter from Cleveland tools. I like the 1 blade cutter a lot but it’s pretty agreesive…gotta be a bit careful.

After getting the new cutter, I finished countersinking the bottom holes on the spar and riveted all of the nutplates. Next, I got the right side ribs prepared, primed, bolted, and riveted to the wing.

That brings me to tonight where I spent about 1.5 hours getting the aileron bracket plates prepared and primed. I’ll rivet tomorrow.

  1. Great log KC. I’m doing my preliminary research and in doing so stumbled across your site. Very good info. I’m also contemplating the -14 so I’ll be following your every move (careful now!).

Quick question, how do you like the DRDT-2 you added to your workshop? I’ve done some additional reading on that previously but you’re the first I’ve seen actually address using it.

Looks like you’ve got the typical 2-car garage set up. I’ll be the same and was wondering if you’re satisfied with the lighting additions you’ve made or would opt for more.

That’s all for now. Keep up the great work. Impressive.

    Cheers,
    Z

  2. I wouldn’t think of going without the DRDT-2. As far as the garage, it’s working ok so far. I’m able to store one wing in a closet in the house and I’m hoping to find another place for the other when I’m done. Storage for raw material as well as finished/set aside parts is something you have to think through. I added 3 8-foot High Output florescents (Home Depot) and that works good for the lighting. It was definitely needed, I don’t know how I did without it in the beginning.

Think through storage space very carefully and a 2 car garage should work for you. On the good side, it’s real easy to step outside for an hour here and there and do a little bit of work. I wouldn’t do that if I had to drive to a hanger.
